  • Nice

The capital of the Côte d'Azur is a city characterised by light, its tranquillity and its landscapes. Its beauty inspired artists like Matisse and Chagall, who were seduced by the city and stayed on to live. In fact, Chagall died in Saint-Paul de Vence, one of the best known of the surrounding villages. With a tram system that's great for getting around the city, there is culture in the streets with urban artwork by renowned artists and street musicians. The seafront is know as the Promenade des Anglais and although it has a rocky beach rather than a sandy one, it has a Mediterranean atmosphere. The best way to reach it is through the Old Town, with its cobbled streets, cafés and churches.

  • Monaco

Bearing in mind its diminutive size, it's worth taking a few hours to explore the principality. Any visit would be incomplete without taking in the Prince's Palace and the Cathedral, home to the tomb of Grace Kelly. In the Monte Carlo area the popular Casino can be found, which the local Monegasques cannot enter. Finally, take a walk over the famous urban Formula One Grand Prix circuit.

  • Beaches

The beaches of the French Riviera are generally of white sand and clear water. For example, in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat you can find Paloma Beach, which has the added, glamorous bonus of being frequented by the rich and famous. Between Nice and Marseilles, in Hyères, one can find L'Almenarre Beach, ideal for surfing. The island of Porquerolles, meanwhile, boasts a contrasting combination of Mediterranean waters and pine forests. In Cannes the main beach is beside the Palais des Festivals although it gets very crowded and space is at a premium. As an alternative, one can visit Théoule-sur-Mer, on the eastern side of the bay.
