Some of the island's most famous beaches and major cultural centres, such as the Auditorium and the Museum of Fine Arts, can be found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The most exciting time of year to visit the city is during the Carnival celebrations in February, with multitudinous parades and the “Burial of the Sardine” ceremony, the impressive finale to the festival. A visit to La Laguna, a university town and World Heritage Site, is also a must. Its well preserved buildings are the epitome colonial style on the island. La Laguna is also the perfect place to discover the local gastronomy.
In addition to its magical volcanic origins, Tenerife also has impressive landscapes, starting of course with theTeide National Park. This is one of fifteen national parks in Spain and it is widely known for its spectacular geological features. The moon like landscape of Vilaflor is unique, resulting from the cooling of volcanic lava. But not everything can be seen from the surface: the Cueva de los Vientos(Cave of the Wind) is the largest lava tube in the EU, with over 17 kilometres of tunnels at three different levels.
With its privileged climate, Tenerife allows you to enjoy the sea on sandy, multi-coloured beaches, of which thirteen hold blue flags. Worthy of special mention are Troya Beach, to the south of the island; the Teresitas Beach, ideal for families; the spectacular Roque de las Bodegas Beach; La Orotova with its monumental beauty and Jardín Beach, very close to the famousLoro Parque zoo.
